Community Convening; Apr 2017

The i.Lab at UVA

We invited students (k-college), entrepreneurs, educators, administrators, innovators to connect education innovators & create opportunities to learn from one another, to present and showcase education innovation projects, and to rally around common goals for the future of education in our community.

After we introduced ourselves, we held pop-up talks hosted by different members of the community on subjects like student-faculty partnerships in course design and student voice.  Then we held a design workshop to create an ideal educational summer camp, generating four amazing and well designed camps.  At the end of the event we thanked Chance Dickerson and Bernard Hankins for their amazing work at the A3 House at Albemarle High School and the A3 House Showcase with a small gift card.  We also offered small prototyping funds to Fang Yi and Moises Mendoza for their education innovation projects.

In total, over 30 community members, students, teachers, and innovators came to the ReinventED Community Convening to help create change in education.

Community Convening; Oct 2016

Jefferson Madison Regional Library

Over forty members of the Albemarle-Charlottesville education community came together to talk about the future of education in an unconference session, an open mic dialogue, and then a design session to discover shared ideal values in education.

The unconference sessions covered a variety of topics including Teaching Entrepreneurship, Student-Teacher Partnerships, and What Student-Designed Education Looks Like.

The open mic dialogue session raised topics such as community learning, the structure of the common school year, and the lack of instruction on public speaking in schools.

The design session led to over fifty values that the community felt were important in education.  As a group, they boiled those concepts down to five core values that they saw as integral in the future of education: equal opportunity, continual & holistic exploration, empathy, student-driven, and validation & courage.
